The theme of 2 John is “watch out for false teachers”. John begins his letter by introducing himself as the author and addressing it to “the chosen lady and to her children”. Who was this chosen lady? Was it a real person or was he addressing a church?
The purpose of his letter was to encourage the believers to love one another. He points out that this is not a new commandment in verse 5. His purpose was also to warn about false teachers in verses 7-11. These false teachers were going from town to town claiming to be Christians but denying that Christ came in a human body to be our substitute sacrifice on the cross. John concludes his letter by telling them he plans to visit in the near future.
Key verse: “I say this because many deceivers have gone out into the world. They deny that
Jesus Christ came in a real body. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist.” 2 John 7 NLT.
