John writes to a personal friend named Gaius. His letter is in response to reports he has
received from traveling teachers. These must have been the good teachers who exalted the Lord Jesus Christ. In 2 John, he warns against false teachers, but here he commends good teachers.
Then John must deal with a man who thought he should run the church as John says when the people don’t do what the man tells them, he puts them out of the church. In those days, the practice was to meet in a believer’s house so it is possible the man could do that if they were meeting in his house. John says he will deal with that situation when he gets there. In conclusion, John promises to soon visit Gaius and the church.
Key verse: “Dear friend, you are being faithful to God when you care for the traveling teachers who pass through, even though they are strangers to you.” 3 John 5 NLT.
