Amos 4

It is rare in scripture that women are specifically addressed especially as a cause of sin.  “Listen to me (it appears these are the words of Amos), you ‘fat cows’ of Bashan living in Samaria – you women who encourage your husbands to rob the poor and crush the needy – you who never have enough to drink!”  (Verse 1).  According to biblical maps of that era, Bashan was on the east side of the Jordan River and Samaria was on the west side but both were occupied by the tribe of Manasseh.

In verses 2-3, “The Lord God has sworn by His holiness. . .”  This is a terrible message to women especially women who are high on the social order.  In verses 4-5, God told them to keep on worshipping their false gods (tongue in cheek I think).

In verses 6-11, the Lord listed all the problems He had caused for this area of Israel already to get their attention but to no avail.  Then in verses 12-13, God tried to explain to the people Who they were dealing with.  Yet until 722 BCE, very few people paid attention to the warning.  In other places in the Old Testament, it does say that some of Israel continued to believe in God and worshipped in the Temple at Jerusalem.  Remember Elijah was told by God there were 7,000 who had never bowed to Baal.
