Solomon begins this chapter in verses 1-8 with a list of things that most people experience in life. “There is a right time for everything.” As we read his list, we realize that all these things are true, but how do they help me find my purpose for living?
In verses 12-13, Solomon, looking only at what this life has to offer, suggests how to live in the light of all this. “So I conclude that, first, there is nothing better for a man than to be happy and to enjoy himself as long as he can; and second, that he should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of his labors, for these are gifts from God.” These are the things that humans naturally strive for. These are the best things we can strive for naturally, but it still doesn’t give us the satisfaction of finding a real purpose.
But Solomon gives us some clues in this chapter of what to look for. “But though God has planted eternity in the hearts of men, even so, many cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.” (Verse 11). Solomon goes on to say, “And I know this, that whatever God does is final – nothing can be added or taken from it; God’s purpose in this is that man should fear the all-powerful God. . .And then I realized that God is letting the world go on its sinful way so that He can test mankind, and so that men themselves will see that they are no better than beasts.” (Verses 14, 18). Isn’t this the attitude of secular society today? They see no difference in a human life than an animal life. In fact, some will mourn the death of an animal but praise the death of a human baby.
Do you have thoughts that life should be more than what you see? Do you want to believe there maybe something better out there in eternity? A good place to start may be found in Psalm 50. “What I want from you is your true thanks; I want your promises fulfilled. I want you to trust Me in your times of trouble, so I can rescue you and you can give Me glory. . .But true praise is a worthy sacrifice; this really honors Me. Those who walk My paths will receive salvation from the Lord.” (Verses 14-15, 23).
