Matthew

Each of the gospel accounts portrays different aspects or viewpoints of the life of Christ.
Matthew’s account portrays Jesus as King of the Jews. He begins in Chapter 1 with the genealogy of Joseph who was a direct descendant of David through Solomon.

The Jews were looking for a ruler who would one day throw off the Roman government and re-establish the greatness of the Jewish nation as it was under David and Solomon. Matthew tried to show the Jews that Jesus came not to restore the Jewish kingdom but to establish the “Kingdom of Heaven”; “from then on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of God is Near’.” Matthew 4:17 NLT. In Chapters 5-7, Jesus sets out the principles of the Kingdom of Heaven. In chapter 8, Matthew reveals how Jesus was able to cast out demons and heal diseases by quoting Isaiah 53:4 (Matt 8:16-17). In Chapter 15, Jesus uses a common Jewish concept of all other people to show that the Kingdom of Heaven was not limited to Jews (v 21-28).

Key Verses: “Jesus came and told His disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age’.” Matthew 28-18-20 NLT.
