Obadiah

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament. Obadiah was a prophet who probably lived around 586 BC or later because his message mentions the destruction of Jerusalem in v. 4; other than that, we don’t know anything else about him.

Obadiah’s message is against Edom. Edom is the nation descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother; they were also known as Idumea according to Wikipedia. Obadiah declared that God would totally destroy that nation because of their treachery to the Jews when Babylon destroyed them in 586 BC. They appear to have disappeared from history after the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD.

Outline:
1A. The promise of destruction. V 1-9
2A. The reason for destruction. V 10-16
3A. The restoration of Judah. V 17-21

Key Verse: “The people of Israel will be a raging fire, and Edom a field of dry stubble. The descendants of Joseph will be a flame roaring across the field, devouring everything. There will be no survivors in Edom. I, the Lord have spoken!” Obadiah 18 NLT.
