Proverbs is one of three books attributed to Solomon. In 1 Kings 3, we read that God appeared to Solomon and asked him what he wanted most in life; Solomon’s answer was “give your servant an obedient heart to judge Your people and to discern between good and evil”. 1 Kings 3:9 NLT. So Solomon’s request for an obedient heart and wisdom were his early desires. Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon form a progressive three-part answer to his request.
In Proverbs, Solomon demonstrates he found the many answers to wisdom. He must have read the books of Moses, other Jewish scholars, and even works from other nations. In Proverbs, Solomon writes about what he has gained from his study and wants to share with his sons and others. This book is well worth reading before you make each major decision in life.
Key verse: “A wise man will listen and increase his learning, and a discerning man will obtain guidance for understanding a proverb or a parable, the words of the wise, and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Prov. 1:5-7 NLT.
