Proverbs 15

Have you ever been around people who don’t know when to keep their mouths shut?  Solomon must have been around those people quite often; he wrote all about it in this chapter.

Some of the things he said include, “harsh words cause quarrels, griping brings discouragement, a rebellious teacher spouts foolishness.”  (Verses 1, 2, 4).  Then in verse 28, Solomon wrote, “the evil man pours out his evil words without a thought.”

Okay, so what does God want from us?  Solomon mentions several things God approves of:

  1. A gentle answer turns away wrath; v.1.
  2. A wise teacher makes learning a joy; v. 2.
  3. Gentle words cause life and health; v. 4.
  4. Only the good can give good advice; v. 7.
  5. The Lord delights in the prayers of His people; v. 8.
  6. The Lord loves those who try to be good; v. 9.
  7. A happy face means a glad heart; v. 13.
  8. A wise man is hungry for truth; v. 14.
  9. The sensible stay on the right path; v. 21.
  10. Many counselors bring success; v. 22.
  11. Everyone enjoys giving good advice, and how wonderful it is to be able to say the right thing at the right time; v. 23.
  12. The Lord delights in kind words; v. 26.
  13. A good man thinks before he speaks; v. 28.
  14. Pleasant sights and good reports give happiness and health; v. 30.
  15. If you profit from constructive criticism, you will be elected into the wise men’s hall of fame. v. 31.

Solomon then ends this chapter with a great observation.  “Humility and reverence for the Lord will have you both wise and honored.”  V 33.
