Have you ever been around people who don’t know when to keep their mouths shut? Solomon must have been around those people quite often; he wrote all about it in this chapter.
Some of the things he said include, “harsh words cause quarrels, griping brings discouragement, a rebellious teacher spouts foolishness.” (Verses 1, 2, 4). Then in verse 28, Solomon wrote, “the evil man pours out his evil words without a thought.”
Okay, so what does God want from us? Solomon mentions several things God approves of:
- A gentle answer turns away wrath; v.1.
- A wise teacher makes learning a joy; v. 2.
- Gentle words cause life and health; v. 4.
- Only the good can give good advice; v. 7.
- The Lord delights in the prayers of His people; v. 8.
- The Lord loves those who try to be good; v. 9.
- A happy face means a glad heart; v. 13.
- A wise man is hungry for truth; v. 14.
- The sensible stay on the right path; v. 21.
- Many counselors bring success; v. 22.
- Everyone enjoys giving good advice, and how wonderful it is to be able to say the right thing at the right time; v. 23.
- The Lord delights in kind words; v. 26.
- A good man thinks before he speaks; v. 28.
- Pleasant sights and good reports give happiness and health; v. 30.
- If you profit from constructive criticism, you will be elected into the wise men’s hall of fame. v. 31.
Solomon then ends this chapter with a great observation. “Humility and reverence for the Lord will have you both wise and honored.” V 33.
