Psalm 115

This is a beautiful psalm of encouragement.  How can gods of wood, stone or metal bless anyone, and yet, many people around the world still worship them.  The scripture says that Satan has blinded their minds so they can’t see the truth God has revealed to us through His word and His Son.

If this psalm were written today, it might say, “O, Christians, trust the Lord!  He is your helper and your shield. O preachers, descendants of Abraham, trust the Lord!  He is your helper and your shield.  All you who fear the Lord, trust the Lord!  He is your helper and your shield.”

Why to Christians?  First, because the Jews rejected Christ, and God abandoned them when before Pilate the people said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”  (Matt 27.25).  The final fulfillment of this happened in the rebellion from AD 66-73 when the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD.  Second, Paul tells us in Gal. 3:27-29 that it is not the physical descendants but the descendants by faith who are the true heirs of Abraham; we are the true heirs of the promise.  Third, Peter tells us, “But you are a chosen race., a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”  (1 Pet. 2:9).

What will happen to us when we trust the Lord?  “The Lord remembers us and will bless us.  He will bless His people, the Church, His kingdom of priests, the descendants of Abraham.  He will bless those who fear the Lord, both great and lowly.  May the Lord richly bless both you and your children.  May you be blessed by the Lord, who made Heaven and earth.  The heavens belong to the Lord, but He has given the earth to all humanity.”

How should we respond to all these blessings?  “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your Name goes the glory for Your unfailing love and faithfulness.”
