Have you ever felt so lost you didn’t know what to do? Some people have experienced that when their marriage failed. For some it may have been the loss of a job just after purchasing a house. Others feel lost when the economy goes down just after they made a large investment. Where do you look for help when this happens?
The psalm writer must have experienced something like this. “I look up to the mountains – does my help come from there?” (Verse 1). He doesn’t answer that question because there is no calvary riding over the mountains to rescue him. But he knows where to expect help. “My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.” (Verse 2).
Sometimes when we experience tough times, we may think that God is asleep. Why doesn’t He answer our prayers? Have we done something wrong? I even thought it may have been caused by something my ancestors did. The Old Testament says that the sins of the parents will be placed on their children to the third and fourth generation.
Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers. His master’s wife accused him of trying to seduce her when in reality she was trying to seduce him. Joseph was put into prison where he spent several years until Pharoah made him prime minister over Egypt.
How could so much go wrong in a young person’s life? Because God was preparing him for his ultimate goal. God had given him a dream while he was young that he would rise to an important position, but he didn’t know hardship and disappointment was the road to fulfilling his destiny.
The author of this psalm said that God who watches over us doesn’t sleep or even nap, but watches over us day in and day out. God has no need for sleep because He is God. God “will not let you stumble; the One Who watches over you will not slumber.” When we think we have failed when we are doing what God wants us to do, we haven’t failed, but God is preparing us for something beyond anything we can imagine. So where should we look for help. We must turn to the Lord for our answers.
