Psalm 146

It appears from the context that Psalm 146-150 was written by the same person.  Each psalm begins and ends with the words, “Praise the Lord”, and suggests the same authorship.  Also, we find in Psalm 147:2 the time frame for these psalms, “The Lord is rebuilding Jerusalem and bringing the exiles back to Israel.”  So the time for these being written was probably after 536 B.C.  We speculate on the author, but of those who may have written these psalms are Ezra the scribe, Haggai or Zechariah the prophets of that period.  The theme of each psalm is reasons for praising God.

In verses 1-2, the writer states, “Praise the Lord!  Let all that I am praise the Lord.  I will praise the Lord as long as I live.  I will sing praises to my God with my dying breath.”   The writer must have been familiar with Psalm 50 where God said I don’t need your gifts, but, “Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High.”  (Verse 14).

Then, the author enumerates the reasons to praise God.  “But joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is in the Lord their God.  He made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them.  He keeps every promise forever.”  (Verses 5-6).  This wasn’t some fluke of a “Big Bang” theory.  It was the plan of God Almighty to make a star studded universe but with at least one planet with an atmosphere designed to support life.

We do not have an account of the total creation.  There is no way to know the when, where, why, and how of this spectacular universe.  But what we do know is that God took a planet that was covered with water and in six days created a beautiful world with all kinds of vegetation, sea creatures, fowl, animals, and two people, our original ancestors, to inhabit.

Even when Adam and Eve sinned in that perfect Garden of Eden, God loved us, humans who were created in His image, so much He planned and announced our redemption.  Speaking to Satan, the arch enemy of God and all humanity, “And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring.  He will strike your head, and you will strike His heel.”  All this was accomplished through Jesus Christ when He died to pay for our sins on the cross but rose in victory the third day to give us the hope of eternal life.
