Psalm 16

David wrote a psalm of praise for all God had given him. There are no requests in this prayer except that God would keep him safe (verse 1). In verse 2, David acknowledged that every good thing comes from God. David was thankful for the godly people in his kingdom; he calls them his heroes (verse 3). The great hero of Israel called his subjects his heroes and then contrasted them with the pagan people around them (verse 4). Then in verse 5, David said to God, “You alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing”.

In verses 6-11, David continued his praise. He was thankful for where he lived, for God’s presence in his life speaking to him through the Holy Spirit. He said he knew God was beside him, and, because of that, he was glad, safe, and had hope for the future. His hope as described in verses 10-11 was eternal life; David knew that when his body was placed in a grave, he would not be there but would be living with God in heaven. Verse 10 has also been used in reference to Christ’s time in the tomb.

What a great opportunity we believers have to just open our hearts in praise to God. This should be our goal to spend time praising God for His goodness to us in giving us the hope of eternal life. God says in Psalm 50 that praise is what He wants most from His people.
