“The Lord is my light and my salvation. . .the Lord is my fortress. . .the one thing I ask of the Lord – the thing I seek most ‘ is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in His Temple. . .at His sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music.” In the 14 verses of this psalm, the words of David above show why he expressed such confidence in his safety.
Knowing that God is in control of our lives regardless of circumstances can make us fearless when the occasion requires it. There are stories of Christians during the third century AD who gave up their lives by refusing to recant their love of God and bow down to Roman idols.
Unlike David, we have easy access to God’s word so we don’t have to go to the Temple to meditate. We, the Church, are God’s Temple because He dwells within us. Yet, many Christians live as though we are in Old Testament times. The only contact they have with God is by attending church and listening to the minister’s sermon. When we don’t read and meditate on God’s word nor spend time in prayer, we become spiritually weak and don’t realize when we sin against God.
