Psalm 31

In 24 verses, David pours out his heart to God, but throughout this psalm, he continually praises God. There are times when all of feel abandoned. Who hasn’t felt like others were talking about us behind our backs, making false statements or emphasizing our mistakes? David even had people trying to kill him including the king and one of David’s sons. Maybe you’ve lost your job, your business has failed or your marriage is broken; there are a lot of reasons to be depressed because we are sinners living in a world of sinners.

Throughout this psalm, David does not announce his deliverance. David speaks words of faith. During trying times, we are often concerned with our honor, but David prays “For the honor of Your name, lead me out of this danger”, verse 3, and in verses 4 and 5, “I find protection in You alone. . .for You are a faithful God.” In verse 22, he admits “in panic I cried out (but responds with faith as if God has already answered). . .but You heard my cry for mercy and answered my call for help”. David closed with encouragement to all who find themselves with the same despair; “love the Lord, all you Godly ones! For the Lord protects those who are loyal to Him. But He harshly punishes the arrogant. So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord”. Verses 23-24 (NLT).
