Psalm 41

David was sick again, but this time his prayer was different than the last time he was sick (see Psalm 38). But David still had problems; David wrote about his own people who had a close relationship with him as his enemies.

First, they thought David had a fatal disease and hoped he would die soon. Second, they would talk with others including household staff to get information they were soon gossiping about. Isn’t it great to have such friends? Of course, we learn from Romans 1:29 what God thinks about gossip, and, in Proverbs 6:19, we read that God hates a person stirring “up trouble among brothers”. Unfortunately these are sins often found among Christian people in churches and families. These are so common in society we forget what God thinks about them.

David begins and ends this psalm on a positive note. In verses 1-4, he wrote about the joy in the Lord he experienced. He definitely believed God would heal him, and he asked for God’s mercy and forgiveness. In verses 10-13, David again praised God for all He had done and will do for him. But David shows that he is still dealing with his sin nature when he asks specifically for healing “so I can pay them back”. Verse 10 (NLT). It doesn’t matter how old we get or how long we’ve been a Christian the old sin nature we will have to deal with as long as we live, but we must not let it dominate our lives.
