Psalm 48

This psalm, written by the Descendants of Korah, may have been a description of the time when the Assyrian king invaded Judah and surrounded Jerusalem with a huge army. Hezekiah was king of Judah; he was one who trusted the Lord and sought God’s will. God rescued Jerusalem by sending the Angel of the Lord who destroyed an army of 185,000 soldiers; only a few escaped to report back to the king. This story is found in 2 Kings 19; the Angel of the Lord is thought to be God the Son.

The psalm writer praised God for dwelling among His people. How happy he was to be able to worship in the Jerusalem Temple. Because this was the place where God’s glory resided on earth, God protected the city.

But, Ezekiel 11 tells us the glory of the Lord left the Temple and there is no Scripture reference about it ever returning. Also, the Ark of the Covenant disappeared when the Babylonians destroyed the Temple 586 BC and has never been found. This happened because the Jews were worshipping false gods. The rebuilt Temple was destroyed in 70 AD by the Romans because the Jews as a nation rejected the promised Messiah.

Where does God’s glory rest today? It rests on the Church Triumphant (all believers). If that is true, then why are churches closing instead of growing? Because individual churches (the Church Militant) are not doing what God commands. In Psalm 50, God tells what the church’s primary function is: i.e. TO PRAISE HIM! If we are to be blessed, we must put aside our emphases on our programs and everything else we do until we have learned how to praise the Lord with our hearts, minds, and voices!!!
