Psalm 65

David thought that going to church should be an uplifting and joyful experience: “All of us must come to You. Though we are overwhelmed by our sins, You forgive them all. What joy for those You choose to bring near, those who live in Your holy courts. What festivities await us inside Your holy Temple.” David proceeded to praise God for so many of the things we daily take for granted.

What do you receive when you attend a church service? Do you feel like you are simply doing your duty? Does the service seem “hum-drum” with only a few people really participating? Did the minister speak to you or do you think he was talking to someone else? A friend once told me he loved his church and his pastor (who may have been his brother-in-law), but he said the pastor was always preaching salvation sermons to the lost and he never felt like he was being fed or encouraged.

What type of church would we be happier in? I once asked my Sunday School class what they would think if during the service someone raised their hands and praised the Lord. One woman responded it would “scare me to death”. Why is that? Do we prefer a participant service or a spectator service and why? Is it possible that the reason churches, even large ones, have closed their doors is because the enthusiasm has gone from their services? David said, “Revive us again that Your people may rejoice in Your salvation”.
