What happens when a natural disaster is about to strike? We humans tend to worry, and some people go into panic mode. We worry because the outcome is uncertain and life short. We worry for ourselves, our family, and our friends; because we are different from each other, the worry list could seem endless.
On the other hand, many people have lived through these natural disasters and found the disaster wasn’t as bad as projected. They decide that when the next one comes they will stay and weather the storm; sometimes it is a good decision and sometimes it isn’t. Mother Nature a.k.a. Mother Earth is not as nice as some people believe. Most of the time nature is calm and allows us to enjoy our lives and the outdoors. But we can never depend on nature; the scripture states, “For we know that all creation has been groaning as in pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” Rom. 8:22
So how should believers handle life in a time of crisis? The writer of this psalm must have been experiencing a natural disaster, perhaps a hurricane. He wrote, “The floods have risen up, O Lord. The floods have roared like thunder; the floods have lifted their pounding waves.”
Then he wrote, “But mightier than the violent raging of seas, mightier than the breakers on the shore -the Lord above is mightier than these!” He knew that he could not overcome the storm in his own strength. His hope and trust were in the omnipotent God he worshipped and served.
We need to take precautions to protect ourselves while realizing that God is in control. He will not allow anything to happen to us that will overtake His plan for our lives. Verses 1-3, 5 show us how he praised God. Praise in and of itself gives us the confidence to face the future without fear because we know God will not fail us.
