Song – Chapters 6-8

Since this poem is written in allegorical form, these last three chapters I have not been able to understand totally.  What I do understand is that husband and wife have come to understand and trust one another.

The Apostle John wrote more than once that he was the disciple Jesus loved.  Solomon is beginning to recognize this as the way God loved him.  In Chapter 6 verses 8-9, he wrote how he felt toward Abishag:  I have sixty other wives, all queens, and eighty concubines, and unnumbered virgins available to me; but you my dove, my perfect one, are the only one among them all, without an equal!”  We know he is remembering his early 30’s by the number of wives he mentioned.

Solomon was growing spiritually and understood that God wants us to be tested to strengthen us.  James tells us, “Dear brothers, is your life full of difficulties and temptations?  Then be happy, for when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow.  So let it grow, and don’t try to squirm out of your problems.  For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete.”  (James 1:2-4).

There is a theme that runs through this book.  In chapter 2:16, Solomon wrote, “My beloved is mine and I am his.”  This may be the feeling a person gets when he or she first puts their trust in Christ or when they have been away from Christ for a time.  It’s like saying, He has forgiven my sins, and now I am His.  That brings great joy to us.

In chapter 6:3, Solomon wrote, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.”  This follows the dream he had about feeling abandoned by God.  He now understands that God hasn’t deserted him because of his failure or because of neglect.  God was there all the time watching over him and allowing him the opportunity to grow.

Chapter 7:10 is the climax of this spiritual awakening.  “I am my beloved’s and I am the one he desires.”  Here we hear an echo of John’s I am the disciple Jesus loves!  That is God’s desire for all of us that we be able to walk every day in the knowledge that, “I am the one Jesus loves.”  This understanding brings joy and confidence that nothing shall be able to separate us from the love of God!
